A first document walks users through installing macOS Mojave on the Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 Mac Pros. Refurbished: Apple Mac Pro - Genuine 2010/11 - Model 5,1 - Intel Xeon 6-Core 3.33GHz, 32GB RAM, 500GB PCIe SSD, ATI 5770 1GB Graphics Card, Sierra 10.12 OS Form Factor: Desktop Graphics: ATI Radeon 5770 1GB. SSDs remain very expensive per gigabyte compared to a conventional hard drive, but the performance difference is stunning.

But if one of the drive bays is available, there's another great opportunity to improve performance by installing a Solid State Drive (SSD). Over time some of us have filled those bays with second, third and fourth drives for increased storage or to build out a speedy internal RAID system.

Storage The Mac Pro has four internal SATA hard drive expansion bays. Working on huge media files? It may be worth it to make out the Pro with as much memory as you an afford. The upper limit on installing RAM on a Mac Pro can be a bit ridiculous - even 2008 models can handle up to 32GB - so the limit on RAM should be governed by your wallet and your needs. I have 2 cinema displays one 30” and 23”. It contributed to video artifacts on my monitors and tested slower than 5770.

Had just tried the 980 Ti, even though its drivers worked. I tried using AMD drivers for Bootcamp from there website, card not recognized, just generic windows drivers. 😟 Since no current Mac has upgradeable hardware it is also something you cannot fix yourself in most cases. This may change in the future but this along with gaming is an area the Mac is very poor at due to Apple's failure to keep Mac hardware up-to-date especially with regards to video cards.

I replaced my my 2010 Mac Pro's HD 5770 graphics card with a PC AMD Gigabyte 280X whose VBIOS had be updated with the EFI mod by ($100 for the card off of eBay and $115 for MVC to flash it). The scores give us an idea of the performance improvements offered by the new card when compared the last edition of the 15in MacBook Pro, which touted a standard Radeon Pro 560X graphics card.
